With an online accounting degree you can expect to take classes in finance, accounting, economics, and business administration at a minimum. This is normally the case whether at an associates, bachelors, or masters level as most programs want you to be well rounded with a good foundation. Many employers will also train you specifically for your particular job beyond what you cover in your degree accounting or finance degree program.

Accounting and Finance Careers

Having an accredited accounting degree means you will be engaged in the preparation of accounting records, and analyzing and interpretation of financial statements. Specific areas within accounting are: financial accounting, cost accounting, auditing and taxation. You can work as a management or corporate accountant, a Public accountant, a forensic accountant, or a tax accountant just to mention a few areas. In the United States most firms want their employees to also be a CPA.

While a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is always an accountant, not all graduates with an accounting degree are CPAs. To become a CPA, an you would have to pass a series of tests offered by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. You can however start of by completing an associate or business degree in accounting.

On the other hand finance consists of three interrelated areas (i) money and capital markets, dealing with some of the topics covered in macro economics (ii) investments, focusing on the decisions of individual and financial and other institutions as they choose securities for their investments portfolios, and (iii) managerial finance (business finance) which involves the actual management of the firm. You can work in investment banking, corporate finance, commercial banking, and financial planning to mention a few areas.
