Acupuncture Training and Education
A licensed acupuncturist, (L.Ac.), will most likely have to graduate from a school within the state where they will practice. However, many states allow entry examinations to be taken if prior certification has been achieved elsewhere. Details can be gained from individual state licensing bodies as to what are the exact requirements.
Each course at acupuncture school will necessitate a considerable investment of time; from two to four years. Courses in anatomy, biology, physiology and psychology will be taken as a minimum. The extra years may be required in states where undergraduate degrees first need to be achieved before acupuncture courses can be taken.
Before enrolling on a course, it is important to check that the school is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM). This is necessary not only to achieve the correct certification, but will also open the opportunity for a federal grant for study. It is important this accreditation be checked each year, to ensure that by the time examinations come round, it is still valid.
Acupuncture Careers
There is quite a vibrant market for acupuncturists presently. These can often be found in separate acupuncture clinics, as part of chiropractic clinics or even in state funded medical centers. Straight out of school, it is best to seek a position that will offer you all the support needed.
It is likely that some experience in the position would have been offered whilst training, so stepping into the business where this was achieved would be a great start. Many acupuncturists offer some massage, whereas many use Chinese herbology; to create an atmosphere and help relax the patient prior to, and during treatment. As such, it is important to ask how each clinic expects treatment to be carried out.
Expected Salary and Projected Career Growth
When first starting out on a career in acupuncture, a practitioner can expect to earn between $30 and $50 per hour. Each hour could well involve treating two to three patients, or more if family groups are treated. Increased rates could be achieved depending on the individual patient.
Creating a private practice when you graduate from acupuncture school could unlock significant revenues, where fees of $250 per hour, per patient can be charged. However, this will also have to cover building and heating costs, salaries, and so forth. A successful clinic could reasonable expect a gross turnover of $200,000 per annum however, which would make any costs for acupuncture courses a great investment.
