Art Therapy Education and Training

Art therapy schools specialize in using various forms of art like music, arts and crafts, sculpting, drawing and other forms of art in preparing students to work with their clients in long-term and short-term care. In many art therapy schools, art therapy classes include: Foundations of Art Therapy, Art Therapy Methods and Techniques, Understanding and Working with Images, Creative Processes in Art Therapy, Art Therapy Materials and Projects, and Exploring Self Image Through Art Therapy. Other art therapy courses include: Art Therapy for Trauma Treatment, Group Art Therapy, and Transformational Aspects of Stories and Art.

Art Therapy Certificate Requirements

An art therapy degree may lead to qualification as a professional art therapist after passing a formal exam. Art therapy certification is pursued after completing the curriculum mandated by the American Art Therapy Association (AATA) Education Standards. Art therapists must have completed a masters degree in art therapy, or a minimum of 24 hours in art therapy course work in related fields from art therapy schools.

Art therapy certification requirements are governed by the standards of the Art Therapy Credential Boards and the Registered Art Therapist (ATR) organization. Prospective art therapists must complete a minimum of 1000 hours of direct client contact after graduation from art therapy school.

The Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB) grants registration for professional art therapists when they have completed the comprehensive evaluation process and have had a review of professional work experience.

Arts Therapy Careers

At it currently stands, art therapists in most states are required to be licensed to practice as marriage and family therapists, mental health counselors or and other areas in psychotherapy. Recreational therapists who have graduated from art therapy schools work with individuals with disabilities and/or emotional illnesses to assist them in managing difficulties.

Art therapy jobs are varied. Art therapists work in hospitals, nursing care facilities, mental health institutions, rehabilitation centers, clinics, government agencies, human services agencies, and outpatient medical centers. Related occupations include: Counselors, Physical therapists, Psychiatrists, Occupational, Therapists, and social workers. Some art therapists work on a consulting or contrast basis, and with some years of experience some therapists open their own clinics.

Expected Income and Expected Career Growth

With the rise in healthcare costs and insurance, many art therapy programs are being downsized by health care institutions like rehabilitation centers and hospitals. The result is a projected slower than average growth in the profession through 2014. The art therapy salary ranges from around $35,000 to $70,000 for salaried positions. Art therapy schools will therefore continue to be a viable option for professionals who love art and also wish to pursue a career in human services.
