It's not a job with license requirements, but it is a job where training is essentially a requirement if you want anyone to hire you. They won't get in trouble for hiring an amateur, but they have no reason to hire you over someone with real training, either. This means that automobile sales training would be essential. Sure, people are less likely to buy, say, luxury vehicles and so on during a recession, but if you take a look out your window, you'll notice people are still buying cars no matter how the economy looks. People have to get around, and they'll be buying cars for as long as the world keeps turning.

Most car dealerships work through commission. So when you sell a car, you get a cut of the sale price. This, sadly, is what leads to car sales people who will lie and exaggerate in order to make the sale. The modern salesperson, however, is more likely to try and lead the buyer to the car that's right for them. In this way, they serve as an agent of sorts making both their employers and the customer (and themselves) happy.

The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) lists automotive salespersons under retail sales workers, where the employment of retail salespersons is expected to grow 17% between 2010 and 2020. The median hourly wage of retail salespersons was $9.94 in 2010, with a range of $7.75 to $23.12 per hour.

Working on commission for big ticket items like automobiles means that you can easily make a comfortable living if you sell just a few cars a week. Even on days when there's no business coming in whatsoever, you still have a shot at making up for it the next day. This means that your ultimate goal in terms of dealing with the customer is to be reliable, honest, trustworthy and friendly in order to seal the deal. This would be part of automobile sales training.
