Cosmetology Education and Training

Typical at cosmetology colleges coursework includes: sanitation and sterilization, bacteriology, reflexology, skin and nail anatomy, blood, nail diseases and disorders as well as practical coursework such as table setup, manicuring and pedicuring, professional nail drill procedures, airbrushing nail art, hand and foot massage techniques, and artificial nail work.

All states require that cosmologist and esthetician positions must be filled by licensed professionals. The U.S. Department of Labor, reports that one should have graduated from a state-licensed barber or cosmetology school and be at least 16 years old. Some states also require one to pass a physical examination. In other states, you need to have graduated from high school while others will let you attend cosmetology colleges with an eighth-grade education. Still, in some states, the completion of an apprenticeship can substitute for graduation from a school, but very few barbers or cosmetologists learn their skills in this way.

Cosmetology Careers

After graduating from cosmetology school, some graduates work for movie stars, musicians, TV personalities. Others work in spas, hotels, resorts while still many work in beauty salons and barber shops as hair stylists.

Nail technicians and manicurists are also trained in cosmetology at cosmetology colleges. They are specifically trained to work on clients’ hands and feet, giving manicures or pedicures, treatments or nails extensions. All states require nail technicians to be licensed in order to practice. Full-time nail technician training takes less than two years to complete, but an apprenticeship program can take up to three years.
