Education Degree Preparation and Training

The certification in Administration can take an additional 1 to 2 years. There are currently Educational Leadership programs as well as Post-Professional certificate programs which will help ensure your goals are met. These requirements will satisfy eligibility requirements for preschools and elementary education. However, for those seeking positions at higher levels additional degrees will help satisfy requirements for higher grades. This would include masters as well as doctoral level work with certification.

In order to earn an education administration degree, students will often have to take coursework in K-12 school Administration, management of human resources, standards-based curriculum, instruction, and assessment, educational research and evaluation, education and the law, and public education finance.

In addition, a practicum, which includes time shadowing an administrator, is also often required. Examples of educational administration courses may include educational management, leadership styles, conflict resolution and management, human resources, educational research methods, curriculum design, educational technology and technology integration, assessment and evaluation, and grant writing.

Education and Teaching Careers

For those interested in their career as an administrator education administration degrees will place students in a good position that will ensure they are able to move into the next job desired. With a master's degree many students find employment as Assistant Principals or Directors of private schools. Once experience has been gained then moving into a position as a Principal or Assistant Superintendent at the school district is possible. To become a Superintendent of Schools or to work at the university level, a doctorate is often required.

Each of these also requires a certificate in Administration along with a degree. Once on the job duties will vary widely depending on the job held. Depending on the position one may be required to hire and supervise staff, discipline students, communicate with parents, and prepare budgets. Additionally, evaluating the needs of schools and facilitating focus groups designed to resolve school related issues, are also frequently duties assigned to administrators.

Expected Salary and Projected Career Growth

The salary range for those holding an education administration degree varies widely depending on the position held and the level at which one works. An elementary school principal, for example, can expect an average annual income of around $87,000. Those who have secured positions in leadership at the university level, however, often enjoy salaries that range from $115,000 to $160,000 annually. In a position of Administration the outlook is very positive and positions should be readily available for some time to come once one has achieved the needed education.

According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, by the year 2017 a 24% increase in the number of administrators will be required at the preschool and childcare level. Additionally, a 14% increase while be found at the secondary level. A career in this field at the university level is much more competitive. However, for those with the drive, positions are available. The education administration degrees designed for this career field provide knowledge in managerial and educational policy, which is essential for success in this position.
