Education and Training

As a trained engineer, you could attend one of many accredited colleges or universities around the United States. Most programs take four to five years to compete at the bachelors level Also, many career colleges and technical schools offer 2-year degrees in engineering technology. As an engineering technologist you would specialize in a specific discipline, but these disciplines generally focus on more practical design and production which can include computer-aided drafting (CAD) technicians, surveyors and other areas.

Expected Salary

Engineering training is varied and specialized. Therefore, entry-level engineers have some of the highest starting salaries in the job market. The U.S. Department of Labor reports that specialized engineers with a bachelor's degree start out with at least $50,000. The range varies from about $23,000 to $65,000 for most engineering and engineering support personnel.
