Online Health Education Degrees

Various specializations in health education degrees can be obtained at different levels of study. It depends on what focus or specialization is desired.

Health issues will never go away and those who need help rely on the educated health professionals to fix those issues. Health educators work to prevent injuries, disease, sickness and bodily damage by teaching communities how to take the best care of themselves. Prospective students can attain health education training online or go to traditional colleges to obtain their degrees. Both of these methods will allow for an educated career in the health industry. If choosing an online method of obtaining your health education degree, there are options for taking lab exams and for training in lab areas, if they are required. Often, local physical colleges will work with online colleges, opening their doors to online students. Health education degrees are available from associates to doctorate in areas such as fitness, nutrition and general health, to name but a few.

Physical Education Preparation and Training

Some of the health education courses that will be required for most health degrees are psychology, school health and human development. Entry-level positions usually require some kind of previous experience through apprenticeship positions or volunteer work and at least a Bachelors degree in a closely related field to the job opportunity. Among others, concentrations in health education graduate programs include:

  • Health promotion degree programs
  • Nutrition and dietetics degree programs
  • Physical and fitness degree programs
  • Allied health education programs
  • School health education programs
  • Community health education degree programs
  • Public health education degree programs

Regardless of the specific branch of study in health education programs, general courses are always required for any higher level degree. Courses in math, English and sociology are usually required. Customer service and ethics are two areas that are encouraged for higher education degrees when the public will be dealt with on a daily basis. Being open to the clients and understanding the community go a long way to ensuring success of health programs promoted by health educators. Anyone choosing a career in health education will want to have a friendly demeanor and good communication skills.

Health Education Careers

Jobs that are available for health educators are most often found in schools and colleges, social departments and health counseling services. Promoting and educating others about disease prevention is an important function, especially in schools and in areas of poverty or sickness. Once a bachelors degree is obtained, certification is possible with online health education degree programs. Some employers do not require certification but most do and states usually require certification to work in their health departments.

Expected Salary and Projected Career Growth

People who obtain degrees in the health education industry should expect to have opportunities available to them upon graduation, depending on their location. Colleges and schools often have positions available. Most health educators, however, work in state and local facilities for city schools or health departments. Salaries generally start at about $40,000 a year and the projected annual rate in the upcoming years is expected to be close to $80,000 on average. The cost of medical procedures and care is on a consistent rise. Jobs in the health industry are always available as health providers struggle to prevent overpopulated hospitals and clinics and to provide the care necessary for the patients already there. Getting health education degrees is encouraged worldwide as our medical technology continues to advance into new and improved methods of care.
