Education and Training

For successful interior design careers, one must be able to read blueprints, plans, and drafts and work with computer-aided drawing (CAD). The education requirements for interior designers vary by location and position but in general, a post-secondary education so as to get an entry-level job. Training generally consists of a four-year degree from a professional design school or program i.e. a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design.

Next you would enter an apprenticeship or become an assistant to an established interior designer. Many states require interior designers to be registered or licensed. After you complete the apprenticeship you would then be required to take the national licensing exam. The National Council Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) exam requires designers to have 6 years of design education and work experience.

Expected Salary and Projected Career Growth

As a qualified trained interior designer, you can expect to earn anywhere from about $13,000 to $93,000 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The average annual earnings for interior designers is about $41,000. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment in interior design careers over the next decade is about 9% and 17% through 2014. The demand for new interior designers and the number of individuals attracted to the field is also expected to increase.
