Medical Assistant Education and Training

Many medical assistant colleges in all states offer medical assistant associate degree programs, bachelor's degree and diploma programs, and medical assisting certification. Courses in medical assistant school includes anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, accounting, laboratory techniques, diagnostic procedures and other theory and practical training. Accredited medical assistant colleges and programs would also provide you with an internship opportunity that provides practical experience in physicians' offices, hospitals, or other healthcare facilities.

Medical Assisting Careers

Medical assistants perform routine clerical and clinical duties in order to maintain efficiency in offices of physicians, chiropractors, podiatrists, and others. Some administrative responsibilities include greeting patients, answering the telephone, keeping medical records, completing insurance forms, handling correspondence, making appointments, setting up hospital admission and laboratory services, and managing billing.

Additional skills and tasks learned at medical assistant school require medical assistants to organize, maintain, and purchase instruments and materials for examining rooms. They keep waiting and examining rooms clean and sanitized.

Specialized assistants perform more duties which include surgery assistance, x ray exposure and developments, and cast making. An associates degree in medical transcription will help to prepare you for these tasks. Others in ophthalmic medical assistants aid ophthalmologists help in providing eye care, where they perform eye tests to diagnose, measure and document vision and muscle function of eyes.

As directed and supervised by the physician, medical assistants may also give medications. They also educate the patients about treatments such as medication and nutrition habits, prepare and give medications, permit refills under physician supervision, submit prescriptions to the pharmacist, take blood, perform electrocardiograms, prepare patients for x-rays, take out sutures, and adjust dressings. These are all skills that are taught at medical assistant school.

Expected Salary and Projected Career Growth

To meet the demand, the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) listed nearly 700 accredited medical assistant school programs across the country.

When you graduate from medical assisting colleges you can expect to earn a median salary of about $18,000 to $28,000 a year. From 2002-2012, the occupation of medical assistants is estimated to be the single fastest growing career. Take advantage of this growth and train to work in a group practice, clinic, or other health care facility. Because medical assistants are flexible and hard working, their administrative and clinical skills will continue to be in demand. Since medical assisting is such a rapidly-growing field, schools across the country offer programs to fill the demand.
