What courses are offered at a nail technician school? Nail Technicians and Manicurists are trained in cosmetology.

Manicure and Pedicure Training Programs

They are specifically trained to work on clients’ hands and feet, giving manicures or pedicures, treatments or nails extensions. All states require that nail technicians should be licensed or accredited and this requires a prospective nail technician to attend a cosmetology school. By attending a good cosmetology school or nail technician schools, you will train in this area of beauty care. Manicurists typically work exclusively on nails, but they may also give hand and foot massages. However, to practice, they re required by most states to be certified or licensed. In general, graduating from a state-licensed or accredited beauty or cosmetology colleges can fulfill this requirement although a separate licensing exam may have to be taken in most schools.

Nail Technician Education and Training

If you would like to work in a nail salon, hotel, or spa,you will need to take additional education courses beyond the licensing process. Most nail technician training takes less than two years to complete, but an apprenticeship can take up to three years. You would take courses in sanitation and sterilization, bacteriology, reflexology, skin and nail anatomy, blood, nail diseases and disorders,as well as practical coursework such as table setup, manicuring and pedicuring, professional nail drill procedures, airbrushing nail art, hand and foot massage techniques, and artificial nail work.

Nail Technician Careers

Nail technicians also go by the names manicurists and pedicurists. They work in different areas like beauty salons, department stores, nail salons, hotels, resorts, and spas. Some manicurists travel to clients’ homes or provide services out of their own homes.

For nail technicians who work in hair or nail salons, they are generally salaried and they are often required to purchase their own tools and products. They may also be required to rent their own booth. Building a clientele base is an important part of being a nail technician.

Expected Salary and Projected Career Growth

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), projects that the field will grow over the next few years. Manicure and pedicure specialists earn about $24,000 a year. Most professionals who have graduated from an accredited nail technician school earn an hourly wage or salary that also has tips. Independent nail techs depend on repeat business and successful independent manicure technicians may earn salaries of over $50,000 per year. Your salary can also be quite high in exclusive spas and salons.
