Property Management Education and Training

In property management training you learn more you may need a background or exposure to property law, real estate, tenancy laws, knowledge about building systems and staffing. Property managers in general will have a staff of clerical and technical staff who report to them. In some cases they work with lawyers and real estate professionals. Some property management classes may include:

  • Real estate license law and administrative rules in property management activity

  • Residential Landlord and Tenant Act, including tenants and landlords rights and obligations

  • Economics of property management, including analysis of markets and properties

  • Maintenance procedures
  • Management record-keeping, including operating reports, budgets, income tax records, types of insurance
  • Anti-discrimination statutes, federal and state, which apply to tenant selection and advertising

Property Management Careers

A certified property manager with a Facilities Management Degree Program can work independently to work in daily operations, or serve as part of a real estate management team as a liaison. Property managers that work on-site are often involved with owners of different properties and their tenants. Some property manager may also serve on real estate management boards to work with projects concerning financial planning, asset management, and resident regulations. The most common responsibilities for a certified property manager are:

  • Ensuring compliance of Federal Fair Housing Amendment Act and local fair housing laws
  • Ensuring renting practices are not discriminatory
  • Ensuring the property complies with local, state, and national laws
  • Inspecting grounds and facilities
  • Enforcing rental regulations and guidelines
  • Initiating lease agreements
  • Liaising between owners and the real estate management team
  • Marketing and advertising properties
  • Management reports to real estate management supervisors and committees
  • Showing apartments or homes to prospective tenants
  • Working with building engineers, janitorial departments, and maintenance services

Expected Salary and Projected Career Growth

Property Managers are responsible for the maintenance of a portfolio of properties. Directs the buying, selling, and leasing of properties in the portfolio. Many people with online property management training manage commercial, industrial, or residential properties. A recent survey shows that the median salary of property and real estate managers was $29,000 a year but many agents made more than $50,000 a year. For example, the median salary of property managers in shopping malls is about $80,000 and the median salary of office building manager is about $95,000.
