Reflexology Courses

What do reflexology courses entail? Reflexology is the practice of using pressure to certain reflex areas of the hands and feet to relieve pressure and stress.

It is based on relaxing and stimulating the muscles and nerves in the foot or hand to alleviate pain or create a change to an area on the corresponding side of the body. Reflexology courses give an individual the knowledge needed to make a career using this technique. This technique has been used since early Egyptian times, evidenced by archeological finds affirming its use. It was during the 1980s that resurgence occurred of the ancient Chinese art now termed reflexology. Along with massage therapy, the practice of stimulating the nerves in the hands and feet to relieve pain in other parts of the body has been on the rise ever since. For the past several decades, many people have and are still turning to natural and holistic methods when fighting disease and illness.

Reflexology Training and Education

To get into courses involving reflexology, a high school diploma or equivalent is required. Typical courses are six months (150-300 hours) of coursework and hands-on practice. Massage therapy, anatomy and physiology would be main required courses. Certificate programs are required to obtain licensure. Supervised clinical sessions are used to show first-hand different techniques commonly utilized today.

To obtain a certificate, it would be necessary to check with the state and/or city/county regulations. There is no federal or national standard for certification in reflexology. Some states do not differentiate between reflexology and massage therapy, though the two have distinct differences in form and intent. Reflexology courses are offered online. Some states require certification while others require only an appropriate diploma showing proof of course completion in reflexology.

Reflexology Careers

Reflexology is a career that can be practiced at home, in the office or in the field. Individuals can practice during certification in hospitals and on friends and family members to create a level of experience. Students interested in massage therapy should continue to expand their knowledge to include this closely related field.

A reflexologist will want to be friendly and comfortable with touching the hands and feet of other people. They should be knowledgeable in first aid and meditation techniques. These extras can come in handy while in the field and working with clients. Creating a strong foundation in business and anatomy also helps to further a reflexologists career.

Expected Salary and Projected Career Growth

When deciding what fees would be most appropriate, it is important to check location. Researching the prices commonly charged by massage therapists in the chosen area is a good indication of the most appropriate fee range. An entry-level reflexologist will need to charge according to their experience until they have more time in the field. Since the schedule for a reflexologist is flexible, hours would change on individual basis, as well.

Self-employed reflexologists typically charge $40.00 to $80.00 per one-hour session, according to Salary.com. Longer sessions would be slightly more, shorter sessions slightly less. Individuals would be able to set their own salary and schedule. As the field of alternative medicine grows, taking reflexology courses becomes a more viable option as a career choice.
