This technique has been used since early Egyptian times, evidenced by archeological finds affirming its use. It was during the 1980s that resurgence occurred of the ancient Chinese art now termed reflexology. Along with massage therapy, the practice of stimulating the nerves in the hands and feet to relieve pain in other parts of the body has been on the rise ever since. For the past several decades, many people have and are still turning to natural and holistic methods when fighting disease and illness.

To get into courses involving reflexology, a high school diploma or equivalent is required. Typical courses are six months (150-300 hours) of coursework and hands-on practice. Massage therapy, anatomy and physiology would be main required courses. Certificate programs are required to obtain licensure. An entry-level reflexologist will need to charge according to their experience until they have more time in the field. Since the schedule for a reflexologist is flexible, hours would change on individual basis, as well.

Self-employed reflexologists typically charge $40.00 to $80.00 per one-hour session, according to Salary.com. Longer sessions would be slightly more, shorter sessions slightly less. Individuals would be able to set their own salary and schedule. As the field of alternative medicine grows, taking reflexology courses becomes a more viable option as a career choice.
