Singing Education and Training

Many of the classes offered will be aimed toward understanding music theory, application and history as well as humanities. Communication is also good to consider taking for this type of career, since it will help you better able teach students.

You may also have to have a proficiency in a musical instrument, which can include the voice. Many will have to complete an ensemble participation in order to graduate as well as application of the lessons that are taught to you. This gives you practical experience in order to be able to understand your students better. In addition you can pursue private singing lessons, vocal singing lessons, opera singing lessons, and musical theater singing lessons. Other courses may include: Music theory, Applied theory, Music interpretation, Ear training and development, and Voice methods.

Many students prefer to focus on education. This will include classes that will help you attain certification in the state you reside in so that you can teach in the public school system. Careers with Singing Training

When working you will have to identify the type of voice training that is needed, and be able to give results based on that plan. You will develop techniques to help them expand the range, pitch and articulation. Developing the voice is important, and one of the key roles you will provide. Teaching the proper way to breathe is also a requirement, and you need to be able to demonstrate this as well as be able to coach the techniques.

You will also be responsible in creating, listening and critiquing vocal exercises. Assigning songs and practice material is also important and you will have to critique and help them apply what they have learned. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) lists areas of employment for musicians and singers as including:

• Religious, civic, professional, and similar organizations
• Performing arts companies
• Educational settings

Estimated Income and Projected Career Outlook

The salary can range between $30,000 and $60,000 depending upon your expertise in the area in which you live. Due to the freelance nature of the work, income can vary greatly from one teacher to another. Those that teach in the public school system may make less than those that do private lessons. The employment of musicians and singers is expected to grow by 10% between 2010 and 2020 (BLS). The hourly wage of musicians and singers was $22.39 in 2010 with a range of $8.50 to $60.02.

The job opportunities are low due to the competitive nature of the job and music education being phased out in the majority of schools. However attending singing training will keep you current and connected with your talent. Good coaches that offer singing lessons will be able to stay in demand and have more opportunities than others to stay in business and gain more students.
