Students who took classes in geometry, algebra, and sciences are usually the students who excel in a sonography program. In addition to requiring that students complete high school, many sonography programs often insist that the student also prove that they have taken some course work. Sometimes this is done through testing. Other times the student must transcripts of the classes they have taken. In addition to taking math, English, and science classes, the student should have also completed one or two courses in medical terminology, something they are going to have to excel at if they hope to get a job. Sonography schools are therefore an important part of the practical training that is received. Sonography CareersThe sonographer speaks to the attending physician, reviews the patient's medical history, and talks to the patient about their symptoms. After doing all of this, the sonographer uses an ultrasound machine. To successfully assist in a diagnosis the sonographer needs to be able to do two things. The first thing they have to do is be able to identify healthy tissue from tissue that is either diseased or injured. After that the sonographer also has to make sure that they get a clear photo which will allow the doctor to see what is actually happening to the patient's organs. Most diagnostic sonographers list several reasons to love their job. The first is usually that they are able to work closely with patients even though they are not a doctor or a nurse. The second is that they get to deal with interesting cases and see lots of new things. The third is that they are able to work fairly regular hours and seldom have to take any work home with them. Expected Salary and Projected Career GrowthThe general population is getting older which is a good thing for the field of diagnostic sonography. As the population gets older, they start to have more health problems which will need to be diagnosed. As a result, experts expect the field of diagnostic sonography to grow 18% before the year 2018, which is more than any other medical profession. Diagnostic sonographers have two choices for work environments Some prefer to work for a doctor's office where the pace is a little slower and they usually see the same patients over and over again. The only down side to this is that they usually don't paid as much as they would working in a hospital. Even so the pay is still pretty good.
